Dr. Christina Åkerman Joins Dell Medical School
The Value Institute for Health and Care is pleased to announce that Christina Rångemark Åkerman, M.D., Ph.D. has accepted an Affiliate Faculty appointment with Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Åkerman is a leading expert in developing standardized outcome measures and shaping policy to improve the health outcomes achieved for patients. She will work to enhance the Value Institute’s international presence and impact and contribute to its health care transformation scholarship.
Dr. Åkerman was the president of the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), where she worked to transform health care systems worldwide by measuring and reporting patient outcomes through a standardized set of metrics. During her time as president, ICHOM and its partners developed more than 20 standard sets that the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and its member states recognized globally. More than 600 institutions across the globe are implementing one or more of the standard sets, which together cover more than 50% of the non-communicable global disease burden.
Prior to her work with ICHOM, Dr. Åkerman served as director general for the Medical Product Agency (MPA) in Sweden, a national agency under the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. She is also a past member of the Board of the European Medicines Agency and former Marketing Company President of AstraZeneca Philippines. Currently she holds the position of Senior Institute Associate at the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School. Dr. Åkerman received her medical degree from the University of Linköping and her doctorate from Gothenburg University. She also has an Executive M.B.A. in General Management from the Stockholm School of Economics.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Åkerman to the Dell Med community. This represents an important step toward advancing value-based care globally, and we are honored and excited to welcome her to the University of Texas and to the Value Institute.
