Experience Group® Methodology
A rich understanding of patients’ lived experience is foundational to designing effective, compassionate, high-value care. To this end, Value Institute co-directors Scott Wallace and Elizabeth Teisberg developed the Experience Group methodology, a unique qualitative research approach that puts patients squarely in the role of the expert and uses insights derived from their conversations to inform health care design. This methodology helps clinical teams make the transition to value-based care models by enabling teams to better understand the outcomes that matter most to patients and the challenges patients and their families face.
Experience Group sessions gather a group of people with shared medical circumstances for an informal discussion about living with their condition. When people with closely aligned medical conditions meet, conversation naturally flourishes and allows group facilitators to observe how patients and caregivers communicate their daily experiences to each other. By listening to patients’ stories and understanding their everyday lives, facilitators discover the health outcomes that matter most to individuals and families. Insights derived from Experience Group conversations are then used to design services that achieve these outcomes.
